Not so long ago if someone asked who could have success as an entrepreneur, the image that came to mind was male, white, middle-aged, protestant, college-educated. Those days are gone. A successful entrepreneur can be anyone regardless of age, race, formal education, ethnicity, family of origin, etc.
As an example, the franchise owners of Fresh Coat cover the spectrum. Some are in their 20s just starting their working lives. Others are in their 50s having finished one career and beginning a new one. Both immigrants from distant lands and multi-generational Americans find the franchise system works for them. Owners represent all races and both genders.
Factors that come into play for Fresh Coat owners have less to do with external traits and more to do with the internal qualities of sincerity, commitment, work ethic, vision and more.
Sincerity lays the foundation. Saying you want to own your own business and actually doing it are two different things. Those actions are critical in that, as stated in earlier blogs, to start a business begins with understanding your values, establishing priorities and weighing options. Researching markets and products is a practical step to show that sincerity.
Next comes making the commitment to a product or service. Once you know what you want, it’s easier to take the steps necessary to establish your business. You’ll have the dedication to create a plan and the determination to follow that plan. In the case of a franchise, you’ll make the commitment to the organization and be prepared to follow its plan for success.
That work ethic comes from the inside. Most successful entrepreneurs are thoughtful workers and strategic leaders. They do the things needed to enhance productivity, reduce risks, provide quality, build client base, and generally grow the business. They use their time and resources effectively for the good of the whole: themselves, their families, their employees and their clients.
Setting a vision for your future lays a foundation for specific goals along the way. That vision can focus on the tangible items like cars, homes or properties or intangible emotions like comfort, excitement or pride. Whatever their particular vision may be, self-employed people like being able to set and achieve the specific goals along the way to make that vision into a reality.
Obviously, lots of personality traits go into being an entrepreneur. As a practical matter, you’ll also need knowledge and skill, yet how you gain that information varies from person to person. Those basics focus on understanding balance sheets, negotiations, investments, hiring and such – all things that a capable person can learn.
Some gain their knowledge in high school through classes focusing on the skills necessary for self-employment. Others learn through college business courses, maybe even earning a degree in entrepreneurship. Of course, others learn skills as apprentices on the job from a mentor. And those who buy franchises receive the insights of the franchisor and fellow franchisees.
Most successful entrepreneurs know they must continue learning and welcome the opportunity to do so whether through workshops, conferences or one-on-one interactions. As business evolves, new techniques are introduced, and owners who adapt gain the upper hand.
Practical knowledge is important. Ultimately, though, the most important factors for successful self-employment may be in your own personal traits and interests. Know yourself and what you want to do. Do your research. Make a commitment. Envision your future. Achieve your goals.
If you’re inventing a new product, you’ll follow a slightly different course, but most people start a business doing something they already see as a successful enterprise. The key word in that sentence is “doing” because whatever you decide for your endeavor, as the business owner, you will be active, engaged and involved.
